American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) is the organization that certifies medical assistants, and provides continuing education opportunities for professional growth.

October 28, 2017– The North Florida Chapter of Medical Assistants will be having a 2 CEU meeting at Flagler Hospital, 400 Health Park Blvd, St. Augustine, FL 32086 Matanzas Room.  Speaker Lois Isabelle RN is a Community Hospice Educator on topics; ‘Communication with Impaired Patients’ and ‘Veterans: The Effect of Military Service on End-of-Life Care.’

Communication with impaired patients. 1 hour
This program examines communication barriers for patients with visual or hearing impairments or a diagnosis of dementia or aphasia. It also offers practical tips to caregivers on how to improve communication with these patients.

1. Attendees will learn to improve communication with visually and hearing impaired patients.
2. Communication with aphasia patients understanding inability to speak is not a reflection of their intelligence.
3. Helping dementia patients by breaking down activities. 
4. Using distraction and redirection with agitated patients.

Veterans: The Effect of Military Service on End-of-Life care 1 hour
This program will identify the unique needs of veterans at the
end of life; discuss the impact of military service and culture
on end-of-life issues; and provide a list of resources available to help veterans. 
1. Participants will gain a basic understanding of about the effects of combat and military training on end-of-life care. 
2. The psychological scars from lethal training and actual combat that can resurface as a veteran confronts end of life. 
3. Some patients’ negative experiences may result in emotional scars.
4. Recognizing PTSD.
